Working at a treatment center

When people find out what i do for a living, they get confused because they thought i was an engineering student.. I am... But i also have been working as an emotional guidance counselor at treatment centers and a private high school the last 7 years of my life..

When i became an engineering student, i struggled at first, ALOT. Because, you see, in high school, i failed all my math classes and had to redo some things in order to graduate. Yes, i did some very cool electives such as AP history, AP digital multimedia, AP marketing, and concurrent enrollment classes like web design, graphics and illustration, was the Alta High webmaster and cooked in the restaurant for the teachers, but math..... i struggled. It was not until 8 years later when i had a change of heart and realized i needed to be a Mechanical engineer. I knew it would be a long road, but worth it. Plenty of advisors at slcc told me that because i was so far behind in math, it might not work out so well for me.

The summer of 2010, i took the placement test.. i was placed into English 2100, but my math was 950. This was sad to me, because it was two classes below what even counted as Gen Ed. I went home discouraged and scared. As an active Christian, i had a good one on one with the big guy in the sky. A few days later, my mother told me of a lady in my area who tutored math. I saw her each day for an hour for about 2 weeks. It was worth every penny i paid her. the second time i took the placement test, i placed in 990. This gave me hope. I continued to recieve tutoring services from her for another month or so. The third and final time taking the placement test, i FINALLY made it into math 1010.

After i had been placed into the appropriate math class, i began tutoring students myself. they say the best way to learn is to teach. So i did just that. After failing trig, because i had never had it before an it was so mind blowing how much info there was, i literally failed due to being overwhelmed, i decided i needed to look for a tutoring job. I happen to come across a local high school hiring for just that. I went in for the interview and felt very impressed that i needed to be there to help these young students with high school math because i had no body to help me. My family couldnt afford tutoring when i was younger nor did my parents know how to tutor the subject either. After a very successful interview, i was hired. I was in charge of tutoring students after school, which eventually landed me a job as a full time teacher there as well as a EGC, Emotional Guidance Counselor. I helped MANY a students with their anxiety, depression, stress, and just feelings that they did not know how to handle. I became certified in EFT or Emotional Focused Tapping, which many therapists at SLCC and USU uses. Its part of the EMDR process.

After an amazing 5 years at this high school, i moved up north where i was hired by a treatment center to help mentor boys. I am currently still there, oct 2019. I help them overcome the overwhelming feelings of addiction, tutor them in math, physics, chemistry, i cook the meals for them, i teach them guitar and most importantly, have amazing one on one talks with them, guiding them through some serious trauma.
